Healthy Desserts YOU NEED To Try!

Hey everyone!
So if you’re reading this you probably know that most healthy food doesn’t taste great.
And what I mean by that is broccoli doesn’t taste as good as donuts.
There’s no denying that.
But at the same time, you know you’re supposed to choose the broccoli instead of the donuts.
Why?
Because one lowers cholesterol, and the other will likely give you type 2 diabetes if you eat enough of them.
So, what, the only way to be healthy is to eat like a caveman?
Yeah no, I tried that, it wasn’t great.
My philosophy with food is that I want to feel good while I’m eating, and after I’m done eating.
5 years ago, that meant figuring out how to make healthy food actually taste good.
So in this post I’m gonna give you 3 of my favorite, minimally-processed desserts, with zero added-sugar, that I eat every day, guilt-free.
*Side note, when I say I eat these every day, I mean I eat one of them every day, not all of them.
So the first one is plain,
nonfat greek yogurt with berries and cocoa powder. This is the healthy version of a chocolate-fruit parfait.
Here’s my breakdown:
You’re getting protein and probiotics without saturated fats from the greek yogurt.
Protein lets you build and keep muscle, which is essential as you age to prevent injuries.
Probiotics improve the composition of your gut microbiome, which is really important for being able to digest a wide-variety of foods.
And saturated fat is the quote unquote “bad fat” because it clogs your arteries and leads to cardiovascular issues. So choosing the nonfat version of greek yogurt lets you avoid this.
Next, the berries - blueberries, strawberries and raspberries (the forest fruits) are literally among the best kinds of fruits out there for a lot of reasons.
There are two that I think are really important.
First, they have relatively low fructose content, which means they have less sugar when compared to other types of fruit.
Second, they’re full of antioxidants.
There are certain reactions that take place in your body which produce what are called free radicals.
Simply put, these things are really unstable molecules and they mess stuff up by reacting with things that they shouldn’t be.
In summary, they damage your body.
Antioxidants basically get rid of these guys and prevent them from doing that damage. So the berries, awesome.
Lastly, the cocoa powder.
Pure cocoa is rich in polyphenols, which are another type of antioxidant, similar to the ones found in berries.
So this combo right here is super healthy & super tasty. You don’t need to add any sugar whatsoever, trust me, just give it a shot.
The second healthy dessert
that I wanna talk about is a bowl of dark chocolate, dates and nuts.
Here’s my breakdown:
Pure dark chocolate retains a lot of the good nutrients that you find in pure cacao because that’s what it’s made from.
So it’s going to share similar benefits, like having a relatively high concentration of flavanols.
These guys help prevent LDL from sticking to the walls of your arteries, which is a huge contributor to coronary artery disease.
In summary: really good for your heart!
Next, dates.
Specifically, Medjool dates contain a lot of potassium - way more than you’d find in a banana.
And potassium is an essential nutrient because without it - without potassium ions, your nervous system wouldn’t work.
Keep in mind that dates are packed with natural sugars - about 16g in a single date. So if you want more to eat for the same amount of sugar, but less potassium, I’d choose a banana.
When I eat this, I typically put 1-2 dates in my bowl, at most.
Lastly, nuts.
Eating a healthy variety of nuts is fantastic for your heart health.
Why?
Well, besides having antioxidants and vitamins, they contain unsaturated fat, which is the good kind of fat.
And studies have shown that unsaturated fats lower LDL cholesterol levels (which is the bad stuff that clogs your arteries).
The third healthy dessert
that I wanna talk about is kind of a dessert and also isn’t, but I like it:
Local, raw honey & herbal tea.
Raw honey from the local area again contains several antioxidants & has been shown to demonstrate antibacterial properties.
In fact, studies have gone as far as showing that honey has immunity benefits that may lower your risk of cancer.
As for herbal tea, again, anti-inflammatory benefits.
More specifically, I recommend chamomile tea in the evenings because it’s been shown to help improve the quality of your sleep.
It’s not exactly a dessert, but for me it’s like a healthy version of hot cocoa to end the day.
What’s more, you can enjoy this tea without the negative consequences of caffeine.
Herbal teas like chamomile and peppermint are naturally caffeine-free.
And if you’re someone who fasts, herbal teas without any added sugar or cream won’t break your fast.
So I hope you found that valuable!
